Welcome From the Chief
Connie Sampson, MS – Chief/Associate Vice President for University Police
Georgia State University is on the move and growing. Members of our police department are very proud and excited to be a part of this growth. As we all know in any setting, safety and security is a basic requirement. At the Georgia State University Police Department, we look forward to helping develop a pleasant and safe atmosphere where everyone can enjoy their experiences without being overly concerned about their security.
The Georgia State University Police Department is Nationally accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) and on March 24, 2012, we were re-accredited! Our department is also State Certified through the Georgia Chiefs of Police State Certification Program, and is currently the only campus police agency in the state of Georgia to be both state certified and nationally accredited. We have recently applied for and have received re-accreditation through the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators.
In an effort to provide a safer environment, the Office of Emergency Management (OEM) was created. This overall public safety concept was deemed necessary by members of the community to ensure that all aspects of safety and security were provided for by the University.
The Office of Emergency Management (OEM) supports Georgia State University’s teaching, research, and public service mission by providing the university community and the institution’s constituents with programs and projects in emergency planning, training, mitigation, response and recovery. As part of the University Police Department, our goal is to provide a safe and secure environment by preparing the university to manage and recover from any type of emergency or disaster. OEM provides specialized expertise in emergency program development by creating, revising and maintaining university-wide policy and plans related to emergency operations, essential communications, fire safety and strategic security initiatives.
The Police Department partners with members of other law enforcement agencies and private security in our surrounding community. In doing so, we will help to insure your stay at Georgia State University is enjoyable, productive and safe. With your help there is no doubt that this can be achieved. So, the next time you need assistance or just need some information, rest assured that we are happy to help. Do not hesitate to call or stop one of our officers for assistance.
Welcome to Georgia State University and we look forward to seeing you on campus and in our downtown community.
